1. Stay safe and stay off the roof
Wet shingles are slick, and hail-damaged ones can break loose. Do everything from the ground.
2. Walk around the house
- Look at gutters, downspouts and roof vents for dents
- Check the bottom of downspouts for piles of shingle granules
- Look at window screens, siding, the AC unit, and your car for dings
- Check the attic and ceilings for new water stains in the next few rains
3. Take dated photos
Photograph anything that looks damaged, and write down the date of the storm. If you file a claim later, those photos help.
4. Read your policy
Look for your deductible (some policies use a percentage deductible for wind and hail) and any deadline for filing. Our insurance claim guide covers the steps.
5. Be careful with door-knockers
After a big storm, out-of-town crews often go door to door. Before you sign anything, check for a local address, proof of insurance, and Nebraska contractor registration. Don't sign a contract on the spot. Our guide to choosing a roofer in Lincoln has the full list.
6. Get a roofer to inspect it
A roofer on the roof can find damage you can't see from the ground. Not sure what you're looking at? Read hail damage vs. normal wear, or send us a request and a local Lincoln roofer will call you.
