After a hail storm, Lincoln fills up with roofing crews. Plenty of them do good work. Some are gone by the time a leak shows up. These checks take an evening and are worth it on a job this size.
This applies to any roofer you talk to, including one who contacts you through this site. We pass your request along. You decide who you hire.
Before you sign anything
- Check Nebraska contractor registration. Contractors working in Nebraska register with the Nebraska Department of Labor, and you can look a company up on the department's website
- Ask for proof of insurance. Liability insurance, and workers' compensation if they have employees. Ask for the certificate, not just a yes
- Look for a real local address and a history in the area. A company that will be around next spring can stand behind its warranty
- Get it in writing. Scope of work, shingle line, how decking is priced, cleanup, start date, payment schedule, and the warranty on materials and labor
- Get more than one quote, and compare the same items on each
- Read reviews on more than one site, and look at how the company answers complaints
Red flags
- Pressure to sign today, on your porch, before anyone has been on the roof
- An offer to cover or waive your insurance deductible
- A large cash payment up front before materials are delivered
- No written contract, or a contract with blanks in it
- Out-of-state plates and no local address or phone
Questions worth asking
- Who will be on the roof, your own crew or a subcontractor?
- Will you pull a permit if the job needs one?
- What happens if you find bad decking?
- How do you protect the yard, gutters and landscaping during tear-off?
- What does your workmanship warranty cover, and for how long?
