This is general information, not legal or insurance advice. Your policy is what counts, so read it or ask your agent.
How a roof claim usually goes
- Document the damage. Dated photos of the roof (from the ground), gutters, vents, and anything else that got hit.
- Read your policy. Find your deductible, any wind and hail deductible, and the deadline for filing.
- Consider an inspection first. Many homeowners have a roofer inspect before filing, so they know whether there's real damage to claim.
- File the claim with your insurer by phone, app, or website.
- The adjuster inspects. The insurer sends an adjuster to look at the roof. Some homeowners ask their roofer to be there too.
- Review the estimate. If something was missed, you can usually ask the insurer to take another look.
- Get the work done and keep every invoice and receipt.
Things to watch for
- Be cautious with any contractor who offers to cover or waive your deductible
- Don't sign a contract with a door-knocker on the spot
- Keep copies of everything: photos, the adjuster's estimate, contracts, and receipts
